Precautions for using carbon steel tanks to store concentrated sulfuric acid.
2022-05-13

At a certain temperature, the corrosion rate of carbon steel by dilute sulfuric acid increases with the concentration, and after reaching a certain concentration, the corrosion rate sharply decreases with the increase in concentration. For concentrated sulfuric acid with a concentration above 80% and a temperature below 60°C, carbon steel and cast iron have good corrosion resistance, but it is not suitable for flowing sulfuric acid. A flow rate exceeding 0.67 m/s can cause turbulent corrosion, especially at the inlet and outlet positions of the pipeline.
When concentrated sulfuric acid with a mass fraction greater than 70% encounters iron, passivation can occur, and concentrated sulfuric acid will oxidize the surface of the steel, forming an oxide layer. Due to the very low moisture content in concentrated sulfuric acid, there are no free ions. The oxide layer will not be further oxidized and corroded. Therefore, using carbon steel storage tanks is completely acceptable, but a certain corrosion allowance should be maintained.
