A steel container used primarily in the petroleum refining and petrochemical industries for storing and transporting liquid or gaseous materials. Operating temperatures typically range from -50°C to 50°C, and operating pressures are generally below 3 MPa. Compared to cylindrical vessels (i.e., standard storage tanks), spherical tanks have only half the shell thickness at the same diameter and pressure, requiring less steel and occupying less space, with simpler foundation engineering. However, spherical tanks require more stringent manufacturing, welding, and assembly, resulting in increased inspection and higher manufacturing costs.
Spherical tanks are large-capacity, pressure-bearing spherical storage vessels widely used in the petroleum, chemical, and metallurgical industries. They can be used to store liquefied petroleum gas, liquefied natural gas, liquid ammonia, and other media. They can also be used as storage tanks for compressed gases (air, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, city gas).
Compared to vertical cylindrical storage tanks, spherical tanks have the smallest surface area for the same volume and pressure, thus requiring less steel. At the same diameter, spherical tanks have the lowest and most uniform internal wall stress, and their load-bearing capacity is twice that of cylindrical vessels; therefore, the plate thickness of spherical tanks only needs to be half that of the corresponding cylindrical vessel.
From the above characteristics, it can be seen that using spherical tanks can significantly reduce steel consumption, generally saving 30% to 45% of steel. In addition, spherical tanks occupy less land area and require less foundation work, saving land.
